Rates are per square metre of wall face. Every construction job carries a $2,400 minimum and $780 for attendance, setout and make-good. The report is the only line you can buy on its own.

Field measurement to ISO 16283 in the receiving room, a level-difference result and a written report you can hand to a strata manager, a shire or a solicitor.

Insulate and add a second 13 mm layer

Strip one face, R2.0 batt in the cavity, two layers of board back on with staggered joints. The cheapest honest improvement on a stud wall — about ten decibels.

Resilient channel, two layers and batt

Steel channel breaks the board's contact with the studs so the wall stops behaving like a drum skin. Our most-fitted system in strata party walls.

Discontinuous double stud

Two separate 70 mm frames with a 25 mm gap between them — the leaves never touch. Costs you 90 mm of room and buys you the biggest number on this page.

190 core-filled block with furred board

Mass instead of separation. Best where you have the floor loading and the room for it — plant rooms, bin stores, a shared wall in a warehouse conversion.

Backing rod and acoustic sealant to every edge, and a solid-core door on full perimeter and drop seals. A great wall with a hollow-core door is not a great wall.

What does Rw actually mean, and why isn't my builder's number my result?

Rw is a laboratory single-number rating for a wall system tested to AS/NZS 1276.1 and rated to ISO 717-1 — one wall, one test chamber, no flanking. Your wall has a floor slab under it, a ceiling over it, services through it and a door beside it, and sound goes around a wall as happily as it goes through one. A field level difference is almost always lower than the laboratory Rw. That's why the number on this page is called a screening figure and why we measure before we quote for real.

Why is bass a different problem, and what is Ctr?

Rw is weighted towards speech. Ctr is a low-frequency spectrum adaptation term under ISO 717-1 — a correction, usually between −4 and −9, that you add to Rw when the noise on the other side has real bass in it: a subwoofer, a kick drum, a dropped barbell, a condenser fan. On this page the gym, the band and the plant source all take the Ctr correction and the television doesn't. That single number is why a wall that handles a neighbour's conversation does nothing at all for their drum kit.

What are the WA assigned levels and who do they apply to?

The Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 (WA) set assigned levels at a noise-sensitive premises, adjusted by time of day and by the character of the noise. The shape of it is what the receiving-room chips reflect: a bedroom at night is the hardest number to meet, an office in the daytime is the easiest. Between apartments there's a separate bar — NCC Part F7 asks for Rw + Ctr ≥ 50 between sole-occupancy units. We'll tell you which one is actually binding on your job, because it isn't always the one you were told about.

Can a wall on its own ever fix a gym or a band?

Usually no, and we'd rather say it here than at the quote. Low frequency travels through the structure — the slab, the studs, the ceiling — not just through the wall face. Drive the band source into a bedroom on this page and every one of our five builds is still over the assigned level, the best of them by eleven decibels. That job is a room within a room and a floor, and it starts with a measurement, not a wall quote.

What does a measurement cost and what do I get?

$1,250. We come to the receiving room with a calibrated sound level meter and a source, measure the level difference to ISO 16283, and write it up against the regulations or the NCC clause that applies to you. You get the measured figures, the standard we used, what we think is causing it and what would change it — as a document you can give to a strata manager, a builder, a shire or a solicitor. It's the only thing on this page you can buy on its own, and on some jobs it's the only thing we'll sell you.

What do you not do?

We don't certify someone else's construction — we can measure what it does, but we won't sign that it was built to a drawing we never saw. We don't sell a treatment we've already told you won't get there; if our own screening says the gap is positive, the measurement comes first and the wall waits. And we don't quote an acoustic result as a guarantee. We'll tell you what the system is rated at, what we measure, and what we'd do next.
