Sealed, painted and undisturbed, bonded asbestos sheeting is low risk — the danger starts when it's broken up and fibres go airborne. Waterblasting an asbestos fence is illegal in WA for exactly that reason. If you're not sure what a sheet is, treat it as suspect: leave it alone, keep people and pets away from any broken pieces, and call. We'll tell you over the phone whether it's worth a $60 test.

Questions we get every week
Is my fence asbestos?
If it's the grey corrugated "super six" profile — deep corrugations, about 5 cm crest to crest, often with a capping strip — and it went up before about 1987, it very likely is. Age, a chalky surface, and moss in the corrugations are all pointers, but the only way to know is a $60 lab sample. We take it safely and you have the answer within 48 hours.
Is it dangerous if I just leave it alone?
Usually not. Bonded (non-friable) sheeting that's sealed, painted and undisturbed releases very little — leaving a sound sheet alone is a legitimate choice, and we'll tell you when that's the right call. The risk comes from disturbance: cutting, drilling, sanding, waterblasting, or storm damage breaking sheets up. Cracked, flaking or broken material is a different story — that's when to call.
Can I remove it myself?
In WA a homeowner may legally remove up to 10 m² of non-friable asbestos from their own property. Legal isn't the same as sensible: you'd need proper P2 protection, wetting-down, double-wrapping in heavy plastic, and disposal is strict — asbestos is only accepted at licensed facilities, wrapped and declared, and fines for illegal dumping are severe. We don't recommend DIY removal, and whatever you decide: never cut, drill, sand or waterblast the sheeting.
What does testing involve?
We take a small sample from an edge or existing break — dampened, sealed in a bag, the spot sealed behind us — and lodge it with an accredited lab. It's $60 a sample and results come back within 48 hours. Most homes need one to three samples: fence, eaves, wet area. You get a written result and a plain-English recommendation, which might well be "leave it where it is".
What's a clearance certificate — and why the $320?
After removal, the work area is inspected and air-monitored, and you receive a written clearance certificate stating the area is safe to reoccupy. It's the document your builder, settlement agent or council will actually ask for. We itemise it separately at a flat $320 so the removal rates stay honest — it's on every removal job we do.
What's the difference between Class A and Class B work?
Class B covers bonded, non-friable material — fences, eaves, wall sheet, roofing — which is our licence and our published pricing. Class A is friable material: pipe lagging, sprayed insulation, sheet so weathered it crumbles by hand. That work runs under a specific removal control plan and is quoted only after a site assessment — any firm number before that would be a guess, so we don't print one.
