    The six questions we get every week

    Who actually certifies a pool barrier?
    Not us. In Western Australia the pool barrier inspection is carried out by your local government, or by a registered building surveyor acting for them — every private pool has to be inspected at least once every four years, and a new pool is inspected before it can be used. What we do is build to AS 1926.1 and hand you the setout: panel widths, gap positions, gate swing, latch height and the non-climbable zone marked up on one page, so the inspector is checking a drawing rather than guessing. We don’t charge you for the inspection and we can’t sign it off. If a barrier we built ever fails an inspection on something that is our work, we come back and fix it.
    What are the 1200 mm and 100 mm rules?
    Two of the numbers AS 1926.1 is built on. The effective height of a pool barrier — finished ground up to the top of the glass or the top rail — must be at least 1200 mm, measured on the outside. The gap under the barrier must be no more than 100 mm, which is why frameless glass sits on spigots with a deliberate 100 mm setoff and why a fence over a falling paving line needs stepping. There is also a 900 mm non-climbable zone measured from the top of the barrier — nothing a child can get a foot on inside it, which catches retaining walls, pot plants, pergola posts and the neighbour’s bin. Gate latches sit at 1500 mm or higher on the outside. The Setout above draws all four.
    Why do the panel widths change when I change the run?
    Because we don’t use offcuts. A run is divided into the smallest number of equal panels that keeps every panel under the system’s maximum width — 1.2 m for glass, 2.4 m for aluminium flat-top, 1.6 m for wire — and then every panel is cut to exactly the same width, with a 20 mm setout gap between them. Twelve metres of frameless glass is ten panels at 1182 mm, not nine at 1.2 m plus a 1.2 m sliver. That is why the price steps in panels rather than sliding with the metres, and it is why a 12 m run and a 13 m run can cost exactly the same.
    Frameless or semi-frameless?
    Frameless is 12 mm toughened glass standing on core-drilled stainless spigots with no posts and no top rail. It is the one that disappears, and it wants 100 mm of decent concrete under every spigot. Semi-frameless carries slimmer glass between square posts — you see the posts, you keep most of the view, and it costs roughly 60 per cent of frameless. Semi-frameless is also the honest answer on a timber deck, on a retaining wall we don’t trust, and on any run where the budget matters more than the last 10 per cent of the view. We will tell you which one your job wants before we quote it.
    How long does toughened glass take?
    Allow two to three weeks from the site template to the install for a standard metro job, and longer over December and January when every processor in Perth is flat out. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or ground after it is toughened — a 3 mm error is a new panel, not a trim — so we template on site after the slab, coping and paving are down, not off a plan. Aluminium flat-top and wire are usually a week to ten days because they are cut and made up in our own workshop.
    What happens on a timber deck?
    The load changes and so does the system. A frameless spigot is a lever — it wants about 100 mm of concrete under it and there is no honest way to get that from a deck board, so we don’t offer frameless on a deck. A wire balustrade pulls roughly a kilonewton per wire once it is tensioned; a deck board and a coach screw won’t hold that, so the posts have to land in concrete or a steel frame. What we do build on a deck is semi-frameless glass or aluminium, with the posts through-bolted to the bearers and a spreader plate under each one — +$60 a panel, and it takes about half a day longer. The Setout above disables the systems that don’t belong on a deck rather than quietly quoting them.
