What the room is for
We size the plant and we log the temperature. Whether the food is safe is your food-safety program, and a coolroom is one line in it. The 5 °C figure everyone quotes is the Food Standards Code 3.2.2 figure for potentially hazardous food, not ours.

The workshop and the panel rack are in Bibra Lake. Everything inside the inner ring is a same-day service call; the outer ring is next morning. We install anywhere in the metro, and we go to Bunbury and Geraldton for installs but not for breakdowns — a room that is climbing needs someone who can be there in an hour, and honest is telling you that isn’t us.

Why won’t my room hold 2 degrees in February?
Nine times in ten it isn’t the machine. February raises the ambient on the other side of your panel — a warehouse that sits at 24 °C in July sits at 32 °C in February, and the drawing above shows what that does to the transmission band. Then add a door that gets opened four times as often during a heatwave, a condenser coil full of dust, and a strip curtain someone tied back in 2019.
We measure the room, read the logger, and put a number on each of those before anyone quotes you a bigger unit. Sometimes the answer is a bigger unit. It is usually the door.
What’s the data logger for?
It records the room temperature every few minutes and keeps twelve months of it. When your auditor or your insurer asks what the room did on a particular night, the logger answers instead of you. It also emails you when the room climbs past a limit you set, which is how you find out at 9pm rather than at 6am.
The Food Standards Code 3.2.2 requires potentially hazardous food to be held at or below 5 °C. The logger doesn’t make that happen — it proves whether it did.
What does it cost to run?
A 2 kW condensing unit — the one the drawn room takes — removes 2 kW of heat for roughly 830 W of electricity at Perth conditions. At sixteen running hours a day that is about 4,900 kWh a year, or around $1,560 at 32 cents a unit. A freezer at −18 on the same box roughly doubles it, because the machine works harder for every watt it moves and runs eighteen hours instead of sixteen.
The cheapest running cost you can buy is panel thickness and a door that closes. Both are on the drawing.
How long from order to cold?
Four to six weeks for a standard modular room in stock panel, most of which is panel lead time and your electrician’s availability. Two to three days on site for a room the size drawn above, plus a day to commission and pull down. Freezer rooms add a day for the floor and the heater mat, and they need the slab prepared before we arrive.
Can I use second-hand plant?
Sometimes, and we will tell you honestly when it is a false economy. A second-hand condensing unit with no history, on a refrigerant that is being phased down, in a room that will run every day for ten years, is the most expensive cheap thing in this trade. A three-year-old unit off a shop fit-out with service records is a different conversation.
Either way the refrigerant has to be recovered and handled by someone with a licence, and the room still gets commissioned and logged. We don’t warrant plant we didn’t supply, and we say so before you buy it, not after.
Who signs it off?
The electrical work is certified by our electrical contractor’s licence and you get a certificate of electrical compliance. The refrigeration work is done under our refrigerant trading authorisation by technicians holding their own handling licences, and the system is built to AS/NZS ISO 5149. You get a commissioning sheet with the measured superheat, subcooling, pull-down curve and the controller settings.
What nobody signs off is your food. That is your food-safety program, and a coolroom is one line in it.
