Every sheet of exposed paper carries a latent image — silver struck by light, invisible, waiting in the dark. Ninety seconds in the developer calls it up. The chemistry is patient. It is also entirely without mercy.

01 · ExposeChoose a negative, set your seconds, expose a sheet. It will look blank. It isn't.
02 · DevelopDrag the sheet into DEV. Swirl your cursor over the tray — the image rises where you rock it.
03 · Stop, fix, hangSTOP kills development. FIX makes it permanent — 55 seconds, no less. Then peg it on the line.

The curve doesn't negotiate

Density against time for a mid-grey, MULTITONE 1+9 at 20 °C. Development is first-order: shadows arrive first, highlights last, and the curve flattens as the exposed silver runs out. The amber band is the printable window. Past 130 s the developer starts reducing unexposed halide — chemical fog — and the print you wanted is behind you. This is the exact curve the trays upstairs run on.

Agitation is not optional. A still tray develops at a third of the rated speed and unevenly with it — exhausted developer pools against the emulsion. Rock the tray. In our simulation, as in life, the image comes up under your hand.

Stop is cheap insurance. Two percent citric acid, twelve seconds. Skip it and the developer soaked into the paper keeps working on the way to the fix — and in these trays, it genuinely does.

Fix like you mean it. The fixer dissolves every grain of halide the developer didn't touch. Cut it short and the leftover silver prints out in daylight — your keeper goes brown by Friday. Fifty-five seconds in rapid fixer. Time it.

The white light is a loaded gun. One switch, every unfixed sheet in the room. Shout before you touch it.

House rules

  1. Respect the fix. Fifty-five seconds, no less. A print that browns by Friday is a print you fixed for thirty.
  2. The safelight stays on. If you must hit the white light, shout it first. Everyone loses one print this way. Once.
  3. Tongs stay with their trays. Developer tongs in the fix will poison a whole litre before you smell it.
  4. Label everything. "Mystery bottle" is how the stop bath became someone's tea.
  5. Last one out drains the trays, rinses them face-down, and signs the book.
