      Reviews

      Three log-book pages

We booked Open Water six weeks before Ningaloo and were terrified. Four days later we'd done four ocean dives, one of them with a sea lion, and got the cards in time. Ningaloo was the trip of our lives because we weren't learning on it.

Priya & Tom, Baldivis — Open Water course, two divers

Card from a Bali holiday, no gear, no idea. Hired the full kit, shore dive off Shoalwater, and a sea lion sat on the seagrass looking at me for a full minute. Ten metres, an hour, home by lunch.

Jordan, Safety Bay — guided shore dive, gear hire

Five of us for a mate's fortieth. The group rate meant everyone paid the same, nitrox for the wreck, and the guide's photos landed that night. Under by nine, as promised — the wreck at eight-thirty, actually.

Marcus, Warnbro — boat double-dive, five divers, nitrox & photos

      Where we dive

Rockingham, the Shoalwater islands and the wrecks

The shop is on the Rockingham beachfront and the boat leaves from the ramp ten minutes away. Shore dives run off the Shoalwater beaches; boat days go to the wrecks and reef between Garden Island and the sound. Divers come from the whole southern corridor and from Perth for the boat days.

The go/no-go call. We read the swell and wind the night before and text every booking by 7pm — if it's blowing, we move you or refund you. No one pays to be seasick.

      Before you book

Questions we're asked at the counter

Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes. For the Open Water course the agency standard is a 200 metre swim (any stroke, no time limit) and ten minutes treading water, and we do it in the pool on day one. For a try-dive you need to be comfortable in water over your head — we hold onto you the whole time.

      How deep will we go?

Try-dives to 12 metres, the Open Water course qualifies you to 18 metres, Advanced to 30 metres. Guided shore dives sit around ten metres; boat double-dives run 18 to 30 metres on the wrecks and reef, so they need an Advanced card or a deep dive with us first.

      What will we see?

Honestly: sea lions most weeks off Shoalwater, seagrass meadows, the wrecks with their resident schools, cuttlefish, and in season a lot of fish. No promises on any single day — it's the ocean, and that's the point.

      Is it cold?

Winter water is around 17°C and we dive it in 7 mm suits with hoods; summer is 21–23°C in 5 mm. Both are in the gear hire, and the boat has hot showers and a kettle.

      Can my kid do it?

Try-dives from age ten, courses from twelve, both with a parent's sign-off. Under-fifteens are certified as junior divers with depth limits and dive with a parent or a pro. A diver medical statement is required for every course; if you tick a box, a doctor signs before you get wet.

      What if it's blowing?

We make the swell call the night before, by 7pm, and text everyone. If we cancel, you choose: move to the next good day or a full refund. Shore dives can usually move to the sheltered side of the point.

      What happens in an emergency?

Every dive has a guide or instructor in the water, oxygen and a first-aid kit on the boat or the beach, and a plan for the nearest chamber. DAN's diver emergency line, 1800 088 200, is printed on every dive slate. Rescue and pro courses are quoted — ask us.

      • Boat days go Saturday and Sunday mornings, plus Wednesdays in summer — a fortnight ahead is safest.
      • Courses start most weekends; try-dives and shore dives most days the swell allows.
      • Bring your card if you have one, and a diver medical statement for any course.

We'd call or text you back the same day from a Rockingham number with the spot and the guide's name. Prefer text? Say so and we'll never ring.
