Why does my RCD keep tripping?
Usually one appliance leaking current — kettles, old fridges, outdoor gear after rain are the usual suspects. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset, and plug things back one at a time; if it trips on one appliance, that's your culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the wiring itself is leaking and that's a call-out. Either way, an RCD that trips is doing its job — an RCD that never trips and never gets tested is the one to worry about.
Do I actually need a switchboard upgrade?
Not always — and we'll say so. You genuinely need one if you still have ceramic fuses, no RCD protection, or you're adding a big load like an EV charger or ducted air-con to a board with no spare capacity. A pre-2000 board with breakers and two RCDs is often fine. The health check above uses the same logic we use on the phone.
What are the WA smoke alarm rules?
Hardwired alarms have been required in WA homes at sale or rental for years. Interconnected alarms (one triggers, all sound) are required in new builds and major renovations, and from 2026 the requirement extends to existing homes when they're sold or newly rented. Alarms also expire ten years from manufacture — the date is printed on the unit. We'll check yours and tell you plainly whether you're already compliant.
What does an EV charger need from my switchboard?
A dedicated circuit — typically 32 A for a 7 kW charger — with its own breaker and RCD protection. Most modern boards have room; older boards may need a load-management device or an upgrade first, which is why we quote from a photo of your board rather than guessing. Single-phase homes charge at up to 7 kW; three-phase can go higher if the charger supports it.
Do you certify the work?
Every job. WA law requires an electrical safety certificate for notifiable work, and we issue one for everything we touch — you'll get it by email the same day. Keep it: buyers, insurers and property managers ask for them.
