Demonstration reviews

The tag holds up when someone checks it

★★★★★

"The food-licence inspector turned every extinguisher over looking for a lapsed tag and found January's, current, on all four. Warden had been out three weeks earlier — because they rang us, not the other way round."

Mara · café owner, South Fremantle

★★★★★

"Twelve years of strata records and we'd never had one complete logbook for the common areas. First Warden visit: every asset registered, tagged and photographed. The AGM took ten minutes off my agenda."

Devinder · strata council chair, Success

★★★★★

"Our insurer's auditor gave two weeks' notice. Warden's reminder had already booked our six-monthly for the week before — the hose reels were flow-tested and the paperwork sat waiting in the logbook."

Col · workshop manager, Bibra Lake

Questions we get on the phone

Fire servicing, without the fine print

How often does fire equipment have to be tested?

Six-monthly, under AS 1851 — that covers portable extinguishers, fire blankets, hose reels and emergency & exit lighting. Extinguishers additionally need a hydrostatic pressure test and refill every five years from the date stamped on the cylinder. Two scheduled visits a year keeps a typical small site fully inside the standard.

What happens if I skip a service?

Honestly: usually nothing, until something checks. A lapsed tag is what food-licence inspectors, insurers' auditors and DFES-referred inspections look for first, and an insurer can lean on it after a claim. We don't do scare campaigns — we do reminders, so the question never comes up.

If there's ever an actual fire or emergency, call 000 — always, before anything else.

What does a service visit actually involve?

Each extinguisher is weighed, inspected, checked for pressure and damage, and tagged with the date and the tester. Blankets are unfolded and inspected, hose reels are flow-tested at the nozzle, and each emergency light gets a 90-minute battery discharge test. Everything is written into your logbook before we leave — that's the document an auditor asks for.

Do you replace extinguishers or refill them?

Both, whichever is honest for the unit. A cylinder inside its 5-year window that fails a minor check is usually serviceable; one due its pressure test costs $66 to test and refill, and a new 4.5 kg ABE supplied and installed is $135 — so if a test-due unit is also aged or corroded, we'll tell you replacement is the cheaper decade.

Who keeps the records?

You do — and so do we. The AS 1851 logbook stays on your site (auditors expect it there), and we hold a mirror in your asset register with photos, test dates and the next due date per asset. The reminder you get before each visit comes from that register. It's included with servicing, at $0, because it's the part that makes the rest work.
