Ellery Hearing Clinic · Wembley · est. 2015

Independent hearing tests in Wembley — audiology without the sales pitch.

You don't remember losing the high notes. The audiogram does. We test, we explain what the chart means in plain English, and we only talk hearing aids if the test says so — we're not owned by a manufacturer, and it shows.

    What patients say

    Heard, in both senses.

    ★★★★★

"For a year I was sure everyone had started mumbling. The audiogram made it undeniable — there it was, dropping off a cliff at the high notes. Six weeks on, I've stopped saying 'what?' at Karen and the TV is back to a volume the neighbours can't hear."

    Graham T · Floreat
    ★★★★★

"Needed a baseline audio for site before Tuesday's flight out. Booked Monday morning, tested in my lunch break, certificate in my inbox before I'd finished the sandwich. Zero fuss."

Dale R · FIFO, flies out of Perth
    ★★★★★

"Three GPs told me to learn to live with the ringing. One hour here and I finally understood what tinnitus is, why mine spikes at night, and what actually helps. Nobody tried to sell me a single thing."

    Questions we actually get

    Before you book.

    Do I need a referral?

No — book directly. If your GP has put you on a chronic disease management plan, bring the paperwork; a Medicare rebate can apply to referred diagnostic assessments, and we'll show you the current schedule figure at booking.

How long does a hearing test take?

A full diagnostic assessment runs 60 minutes: booth audiometry for both ears, speech testing, tympanometry, and your results explained before you leave. A workplace baseline certificate test takes about 20 minutes — genuinely a lunch-break job.

What does the audiogram actually mean?

It's a chart of the quietest sound you can hear at each pitch — low frequencies on the left, high on the right, and the further down the mark, the louder that pitch has to be before you catch it. The amber "speech banana" shows where conversation lives. When your curve drops below the banana at the high end, consonants like s, f and th blur first — which is why people seem to mumble long before anything sounds quiet.

The curves on this page are typical patterns, drawn to show you how the chart reads. Yours is measured in the booth.

Are you going to sell me hearing aids?

Only if the test says so — most first visits end with a baseline and advice, not a fitting. We're independent: no manufacturer owns us and nobody here carries a fitting quota. When aids are the right answer, device pricing spans entry to premium tiers and is set by the manufacturer schedule — we quote after your assessment, across brands, and your assessment fee is credited in full against the fitting.

What about Medicare, health funds and the pension?

Medicare rebates apply to some referred diagnostic assessments — the schedule sets the rebate and we show you the current figure at booking. Health funds with hearing extras cover part of the fee; your fund sets the amount. Eligible pensioners and veterans are fitted under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program — the program schedule applies, and we'll help you check your eligibility.

My partner says the TV's too loud, but it sounds fine to me.

That's the most common opening line in the clinic, and it's usually the high frequencies going quietly — you're not imagining that voices seem mumbly while the doorbell is still loud. Age-related loss creeps in over years, so your brain keeps recalibrating "normal". A 60-minute assessment settles it either way, and a baseline now makes every future test more useful.
