Fairbank Insurance Brokers

Fairbank Insurance Brokers · Osborne Park · est. 2011

Business insurance for WA trades, builders and small practices — placed by a broker who reads the wording.

Build an indicative schedule of cover below, then call us and we'll argue the limits, the excesses and the exclusions line by line. We're paid commission by the insurer. We work for you. Both of those are in writing.

Each band is a cover, drawn to the height of its own annual premium against $1,000 gridlines. The oxblood rule is the running total; the hatched space above it is the headroom left in the frame. Hover a band — or focus a cover below — to lift its schedule line.

A van is a van — motor and tools are rated on the asset, not your turnover. Turning the turnover stepper moves public liability, professional indemnity, contents & stock, business interruption and cyber. It does not move commercial motor or tools & equipment, and we won't pretend it does.
Workers' compensation we place for you, but we don't estimate it here — the premium comes off the WA gazetted rates and your own wages declaration.
We're paid commission by the insurer, and any broker fee is disclosed in writing before you bind. Both figures are on your invoice.

    What these figures are

Indicative annual premiums for a business with no claims in the last five years. The underwriter sets the actual premium once they've seen your claims history and your work mix — this is general information, not personal advice, and you get a Financial Services Guide before anything is placed.

Premiums shown are GST- and duty-inclusive and assume one location in the Perth metropolitan area. Change the trade, the turnover or the headcount and every band redraws from the same table.

Cheapest complete schedule in this model: $760 a year — public liability alone, electrical contractor, $250k turnover.

    What we place

Every figure below is an indicative annual premium for a business with no claims in the last five years. The underwriter sets the actual premium once they've seen your claims history and your work mix — this is general information, not personal advice, and you get a Financial Services Guide before anything is placed.

    SEC 01from $620 a year

    Public liability

The cover your builder client actually asks for. Limits to $20,000,000, certificates of currency issued the same day you ask. No insurer will write the rest of the pack without it.

    SEC 02$180 a year

    Tools & equipment

$15,000 of hand and power tools, in the ute or on site, including theft from a locked vehicle overnight. Rated on the asset, so turnover doesn't move it.

    SEC 03from $780 a year

    Commercial motor

One vehicle — ute, van or truck under 4.5 t — with tools of trade, hired-in plant and a windscreen excess we'll argue about before you sign, not after.

    SEC 04from $980 a year

    Professional indemnity

For advice, design and specification. $2,000,000 limit, run-off discussed at renewal. A café doesn't need it. A design-and-construct builder absolutely does.

    SEC 05from $260 a year

    Contents & stock

Fit-out, stock, cool-room contents and the till. Scales with turnover because that is what the sum insured is actually tracking.

    SEC 06from $240 a year

    Business interruption

Twelve-month indemnity period on gross profit, with additional increased cost of working. The cover people skip and then wish they hadn't.

    SEC 07from $420 a year

    Cyber

$250,000 limit covering ransomware response, data restoration and the notifiable-breach process. Includes an incident line that answers on a Sunday.

    SEC 08from $520 a year

    Management liability

$1,000,000 for directors' liability, employment practices and statutory fines where insurable. Priced on headcount, because that is where the exposure sits.

    SEC 09placed, not estimated

    Workers' compensation

Workers' compensation we place for you, but we don't estimate it here — the premium comes off the WA gazetted rates and your own wages declaration. We lodge it, we chase the certificate, we don't guess the number.

    SEC 10no extra charge

    Claims

Claims handled by us end to end — quoted on nothing, because arguing your claim is what the commission already paid for. You call one number and we do the rest.

    What clients say

Electrical · WangaraThe builder wanted a $20 million certificate before we could get on site that afternoon. I rang at 9:40 and had the certificate in my inbox by 10:15 with the right limit and the right project name on it.

    Dean R. — electrical contractor

Courier · Bibra LakeVan and liability were falling due in the same week with two different insurers. Fairbank put them on one renewal date, showed me what each one actually excluded, and talked me out of a cover I didn't need.

    Marika T. — courier operator

Allied health · JoondalupI was setting up my own practice and had no idea what PI actually covered. They read me the wording, told me what was not in it, and put the commission number in the email before I asked.

    Priya S. — physiotherapist

    Questions we get every week

How quickly can I get a certificate of currency?
Same business day, and usually within the hour if your policy is already with us. Send the project name, the principal's name and the limit they're asking for — most builders want $20,000,000 and most contracts specify it. If you're a new client we need the policy bound first, which for a straightforward trade pack is normally same day.
What does public liability actually cover?
Your legal liability for injury to someone else or damage to someone else's property arising from your business. It does not cover your own tools, your own vehicle, the work itself if you do it badly, or your employees — those are tools cover, motor, professional indemnity or defects liability, and workers' compensation respectively. The most expensive misunderstanding in the trade is assuming public liability covers rectifying your own faulty work. It doesn't.
What is professional indemnity and do I need it?
It covers claims arising from advice, design or specification — you told someone something, they relied on it, and it cost them money. If you design and construct, certify, specify, or give written recommendations, you need it. A café serving lunch and a courier delivering pallets don't buy it, which is why the estimator above turns it off for those trades rather than quietly pricing something you'd never use.
    How are brokers paid?
We're paid commission by the insurer — a percentage of the premium, built into the figure you pay, typically 10–20% depending on the insurer and the class. If we also charge a broker fee, it is disclosed in writing before you bind, and both numbers appear on your invoice. Ask any broker for those two figures in writing. If the answer is vague, that tells you something.
Why is the cheapest quote usually the narrowest?
Because price differences between insurers on the same risk are rarely large — the differences are in the wording. Cheaper packs typically carry a lower sub-limit for tools left in a vehicle, a tighter definition of "your product", a heat-work exclusion, or a maintenance condition on your electrical testing. We'll show you the two wordings side by side and let you decide which risk you'd rather carry.
    What happens when I claim?
You call us, not the insurer. We lodge it, we brief the assessor, and where the insurer's first position is wrong we argue it — including internal dispute resolution and, if it comes to it, AFCA. Claims are handled end to end at no extra charge, because arguing your claim is what the commission already paid for.
