The cheapest first consult on this page is $110, and that is exactly where the fee estimate bottoms out for a first visit. A follow-up video is $95, but only once we have already met. Prices are per consult, not per hour, and there is no after-hours or weekend loading.

This is the cheapest consult we do, and for most first-week latch questions it is the right one.

We will talk you out of the home visit when you do not need it. If the baby needs weighing, or you want hands-on help with positioning, say so when you ring and we will book the clinic or a home visit instead.

Every consult includes a written plan the same day. Follow-ups are cheaper than first visits and you are never charged for a phone call. Nothing here costs more than $310.

What happens in a consult

Four things, in this order, every time

    You tell me what is happening

    Baby's age, a recent weight if you have one, and what has gone wrong today. Two minutes on the phone or in the form below. Nothing is a stupid thing to ring about.

    We watch a whole feed

    Start to finish, with me saying nothing for the first part of it. Most of the answer is in there, and you cannot see it from where you are sitting.

  3. 3

    We change one or two things

    Position, attachment, timing, or the bottle. Then you feed again while I am still on the call, so you know it works before I go.

  4. 4

    You get it in writing

    A plan in your inbox the same day, in plain words, with what to do if it stops working at 2am. A follow-up in five to seven days if you want one.

Clinic

The clinic room is in Inglewood, five minutes from the freeway. Pram access, a door that locks, a set of baby scales, and somewhere to put the other child.

Video

Anywhere in Western Australia, and anywhere else you happen to be. Kununurra, Kalgoorlie, a hospital car park in Subiaco. Video is the same $110 wherever you are, because there is nothing to drive.

Straight answers

How soon can I be seen?

Ring between 7am and 9pm any day and you will get me or a call back the same day. Video consults usually run same day or next. Clinic and home visits are usually inside two working days.

If you ring overnight, leave a message. It is answered by 7am.

Is it supposed to hurt?

Feeding can be tender in the first week while everything is new. Cracked, bleeding, toe-curling pain that lasts the whole feed is not something to grit your teeth through, and it is the single most common reason people ring.

It is usually an attachment or positioning problem, and it is usually visible on video in the first five minutes.

Can I claim any of this back?

Some private health funds pay an extras rebate towards a lactation consultation. Whether yours does, and whether it applies to this practitioner, depends on your fund and on the practitioner's provider status. Ring your fund, tell them the consult type, and they will tell you in a minute.

We deliberately do not print rebate amounts or item numbers on this page. They change, they differ by fund and by cover level, and a wrong number here would cost you money and not us. You get a receipt with everything your fund asks for.

Do you deal with tongue-tie?

We assess how your baby moves their tongue and palate and how that is showing up in the feed. If it looks like it needs a clinician's opinion, we say so and refer you on to someone who can give one.

We do not perform the procedure, and we will not tell you what the result of one would be. Anybody who promises you an outcome has not met your baby.

What if I have decided to stop?

Then we help you stop comfortably. Weaning, dropping a feed at a time, mixed feeding, going fully to formula — all of those are consults, and there is no version of this where you get a lecture. Plenty of the plans we write are about finishing.

What do I need for a video consult?

A phone or laptop propped up so both your hands are free, a feed that is about due, and a bit of light. If someone else is home, ask them to hold the camera for the latch. You do not need to tidy up and you do not need to get dressed.

Nothing on this page is an emergency service, and a lactation consultant is not the right first call for a sick baby.
