The sphere tells us where a strike can reach; what your building actually needs is a risk assessment against AS 1768, and we do that on site before we quote a single finial. This drawing is a sizing tool, not a design — nothing on this page is certified, and a lightning protection system does not prevent a strike. It gives the current a preferred path to earth.

LPS design and install

Air terminals or a mesh conductor, tape down the walls, earth electrodes in inspection pits, bonded back to the main earth per AS/NZS 3000. Tested and handed over with a certificate and an as-built drawing.

Risk assessment to AS 1768

The part your insurer keeps asking about. We walk the roof, count what’s on it, look at what’s inside and what the loss would be, and write the protection level down with the reasoning behind it.

Annual test and certificate

Continuity across every joint, condition of the tape and clamps, and a resistance reading at each electrode. You get a dated certificate and a defect list, which is what the auditor wants to see.

Fall-of-potential on each electrode, with the pit lids up and the readings logged against the drawing. Sandy Perth soil drifts upward through summer, so the number matters more here than it does east.

Questions we get asked on the roof

Will a lightning protection system stop my building being struck?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. AS 1768's own language is that the system provides a preferred path to earth: air terminals intercept the strike, down conductors carry it down the outside of the building, and the electrodes put it into the ground away from your switchboard, your cabling and your people. The building still gets hit. It just doesn’t get hit through the roof sheet.
How do you decide whether my building needs one at all?
A risk assessment to AS 1768 — strike density for the location, the size and height of the structure, what it’s built from, what’s inside it and what the loss looks like if it burns or stops. That produces a protection level, and the level sets the sphere radius, the mesh size and the down-conductor spacing. The four levels we show on this page carry the standard’s published radii (20, 30, 45 and 60 metres); the plain-English building types beside them are our shorthand for where our jobs usually land, not a classification out of the standard.
What’s actually in the price?
Design and the AS 1768 assessment, the air terminals or mesh, the roof conductor, one down conductor per length of perimeter set by the protection level, an earth electrode and inspection pit at the foot of each down conductor, and the test and certificate at handover. Access — scaffold, EWP or rope — is priced once we’ve seen the parapet, and it is not in the figure on this page. Neither is GST.
My roof is 0.6 mm Colorbond. Do I still need air terminals?
Usually not. AS 1768 accepts metal sheeting of 0.5 mm or thicker as a natural air-termination where puncture of the sheet is acceptable and there’s nothing flammable directly beneath it — the roof is the terminal. What you’re buying then is bonding at the sheet, the down conductors and the earthing, not finials. Set the roof chip to “metal deck” above and watch the terminal count go to zero and the price drop.
Is surge protection part of a lightning protection system?
It’s a separate subject in the standard and a separate line on our quote, and in a data or comms building it’s the part that saves you money. A structural system protects the fabric; it does nothing for a transient arriving on the fibre, the mains or a control cable. SPDs at the switchboard and on the incoming services are what protect the equipment, coordinated with the earthing per AS/NZS 3000.
We store diesel and LPG on site. Can I use this calculator?
No — and the page won’t let you. Protecting a hazardous area is a different design: bonding and separation distances, equipotential earthing, and an assessment of the classified zones before anything is fixed to a tank.
