The deck

Live sheep export by sea is legislated to end on 1 May 2028, backed by a $107 million federal transition package and a WA Roadmap to 2028. Rural transport carries 25–50% of its revenue from the live trade, and the sheep that stop going to the wharf go to a processor instead — farm to abattoir, not farm to Fremantle. Questions we get on the phone

How many head fit on a deck?

Our B-double runs four decks at 105 head a deck — 420 head to a load. Lambs pack tighter than ewes and cattle run a different configuration again; tell us the mob and we will tell you the decks.

Do you cart to the eastern states?

Yes. Interstate consignments are quoted per consignment, from $34 a head, because the return leg and the border paperwork change load to load — ring us with the numbers and we will give you a figure before you commit.

What happens if my numbers change on the day?

They usually do. Tell us before we load and we re-price on the actual head count — the deck calculator above shows how the total and the dollars-a-head move either way, up or down a load.

Who is responsible for fitness to load?

You are, as the last person to handle the stock before transport, under the national Is it fit to load? guide. We check again at the ramp, and we will not load an animal that should not travel — that conversation is free and it happens before the truck backs in, not after.

How far ahead do I need to book at saleyard time?

Saleyard days book out early — call the week before if you can. We hold a slot for the morning of when a truck is free, but a Tuesday call beats a Wednesday-night hope.

Do you do cattle as well as sheep?

Yes. Cattle run on the road-train configuration, from $9.50 a loaded kilometre; sheep and lambs run the B-double deck, from $8.00. Same booking line either way.
