Before you pay anyone for a licence
Your dentists don’t need a licence for intraoral, OPG or ceph. Don’t pay anyone for one.

To the Council’s Dental X-ray Equipment Workbook 2023, with calibrated meters: tube voltage, exposure time, output and beam size. Most units take under an hour.

The Council’s words: “All tests must be assessed and certified by a qualified expert.” Your report goes to one inside the Council’s one-month limit.

What practice managers ask
How often does our x-ray equipment need testing?
The Council sets a test period for each kind of equipment. The two that matter to a dental practice:
“Dental (intraoral, panoramic tomography, and equipment with combined panoramic tomography and cephalometry) 36 months” · “Cone Beam CT 24 months”
General radiography, the usual chiropractic room, is 24 months. Program Requirements (2025), 1.3
When should we book the test?
In the three months before the certificate expires. The Council fixes your anniversary so testing early inside that window costs you nothing:
“Equipment tested not more than three months before the current expiry date” gets “The current expiry date plus one test period”.
Test earlier than that and the new date runs from the test day, so the months in between are gone. The estimator above shows exactly how many.
Our certificate has lapsed. What now?
“The continued use of x-ray equipment subject to the compliance testing program after the expiry date of its current compliance certification is an offence.”
Stop using the unit on patients and ring us on (08) 9000 0603. Tested not more than six months after expiry, the new certificate keeps the old anniversary; later than that, it runs from the test date. Program Requirements (2025), 1.4
Do our dentists need a radiation licence?

What actually happens during a test?
We work through the Council’s Dental X-ray Equipment Workbook 2023. With calibrated meters we measure what the unit delivers against what its settings say: tube voltage, exposure time, radiation output and the size of the beam. Nothing is adjusted on your unit, and the chair is free again when we pack up.
The report then goes to a qualified expert, because “All tests must be assessed and certified by a qualified expert.”
We’re fitting out a CBCT room. Where do we start?
“A radiation shielding assessment will need to be conducted by a third-party radiation consultant for the room where the CBCT equipment will be installed.” “The shielding assessment must be submitted to the Radiological Council for review before a CBCT unit can be approved for use.”
