Straight answers, hills edition
Is rainwater safe to drink?
From a clean roof, with a first-flush diverter and the right filters, rainwater is widely drunk across the hills — plenty of our customers run the whole house on it. We plumb to health guidance and we'll talk you through roof condition, filtration and maintenance honestly on the site look.
What size tank do I need?
Most hills homes run 23 kL or more if the block allows. The calculator's fills-a-year line is the guide: if your roof fills a tank four or more times a year, the next size up rides the dry months better. Size for the gap between what winter gives you and what summer takes.
Do I need a tank pad?
Yes — a level, compacted base a bit wider than the tank. Yours if you want to build it, or we quote pads, retaining and site prep after a site look. Steel and underground tanks are quoted the same way — every hills block is different.
Will it work with my retic?
Garden pump kits tee straight into the retic or a hose point. The pump holds pressure the retic expects, so stations run as normal — just off your roof instead of the scheme.
What about summer, when it doesn't rain?
The tank you catch in winter is the water you spend in summer — that's the whole game in the hills. Size for the gap, and if the house runs on the tank, the rain-to-mains switchover quietly tops up from the scheme only when the level runs low.
Do you do steel or underground tanks?
Yes — both come up a lot near the scarp, for fire ratings and for tight blocks. They're quoted after a site look rather than priced on the page, because excavation and crane access change everything.
