    The six questions we get every week

    Why rope access instead of an EWP or scaffold?
    Three reasons, usually. Reach: a boom lift needs hardstand, a set-up footprint and a clear path to the elevation — courtyards, light wells, river-side setbacks and podium roofs rule it out. Time: we rig off the roof in the first hour and are working; scaffold on an eight-storey elevation is days of erection before anyone cleans anything. Cost: for short-duration work above four storeys, rope access is normally the cheapest of the three once you price the hire, the traffic management and the footpath permit. Where an EWP genuinely is the right tool — a low, open elevation with parking beside it — we will tell you, and we don’t hire them out.
    Why is the minimum crew two technicians?
    Because the rescue plan needs someone to perform it. Industry practice under the IRATA framework and AS/NZS 1891 is that nobody works on rope alone: the second technician is trained and rigged to come and get the first one, and is not there to hand up buckets. The stepper on the drop plan starts at two for that reason, and above twelve storeys it starts at three — two on rope, one at the top as the rescue and the rope watch. It is the one number on this page we will not negotiate.
    What is a drop plan, and who signs it?
    A drop plan is the marked-up elevation: where each rope is anchored, where it lands, what is below it, where the exclusion zone goes and how a technician gets recovered if they can’t descend. It is signed by our Level 3 supervisor and issued with the job-specific SWMS, the rope and equipment logs and the certificate of currency. Above four storeys it is a written document with rope-access supervisor sign-off; above twelve, your building management will normally want it in their permit pack with a rescue plan lodged. That work is in the rigging fee on the estimate — we don’t bill you for our own paperwork.
    What do building management charges look like?
    They are the tower’s charges, not ours: after-hours access, lift or hoist bookings, roof-access permits, induction fees and sometimes a security escort. They vary building to building and we have no control over them, so they are billed at cost on the invoice and they are never in the estimate on this page. On a CBD tower it is often a few hundred dollars; on a suburban block it is usually nothing. We will tell you what we’ve been quoted before we book the days.
    Insurance, inductions and what you’ll need from us
    $20M public liability with the certificate of currency attached to the quote, workers compensation, current IRATA logbooks for every technician, White Cards, and a job-specific SWMS. If your building runs its own induction — most managed towers do — send it through with the booking and the crew will complete it before the first day rather than standing in the foyer at 6am. Anchor certificates to AS/NZS 5532 come from us too, and if your anchors aren’t certified we’ll say so before we quote the clean.
    How does weather affect the booking?
    Wind is the one that stops us, not rain. We work to a wind limit at the working height rather than at ground level, so a gusty spring day on an eighteen-storey elevation can be a stand-down when the street feels fine. Lightning within range stops work immediately. Rain mostly matters for coatings and sealant, which need a dry substrate and a cure window. Bookings are held as a range of days rather than one date, we watch the forecast, and a weather stand-down is never charged as a day.
