Hardstand Blast & Coat · Kwinana Beach

Abrasive blasting and protective coatings — Kwinana Beach, and mobile where the plant can't move

Garnet blasting in the booth, two-pack epoxy, polyurethane and zinc silicate systems sprayed and cured under cover. Tell the Blast Line the surface standard, the system and the square metres and it prices the job before you ring.

Blasted to ISO 8501-1 Film readings on every job Seventeen years on the hardstand

Blasted to the standard, coated to the spec, back on your truck Friday. Steel in on Monday is masked, blasted and primed the same day — the cure clock is the only thing that slows us down, and we tell you what it is before you book the float.

The Blast Line

Bay 2 · Kwinana Beach

The blast booth with the nozzle part way across the work A blast booth in elevation. The item sits on trestles; behind the nozzle the steel is mill scale and rust, ahead of it the steel is blasted to the selected standard and washed in the selected topcoat. A garnet plume pulses at the nozzle and settles to a dust bed on the floor. A dry-film-thickness gauge at the right draws the coating layers in microns against a constant micron rule, and a one metre rule on the floor holds the scale honest.

Carbon copy · conditions

  • Our minimum job is $980 — under about 20 m² that's what a booth setup and a cure cycle cost us whatever the system.
  • Masking, degrease, abrasive, cure time and a coating report with wet and dry film readings are in the rate — we don't bill consumables separately.
  • Surface area is your figure until we measure it on the hardstand — if the drawing and the steel disagree we call you before we blast.

Getting it here

Send this spec through Prices include GST. Nothing is charged until the steel is on the hardstand and measured.

    Rates on the board

Two rates a square metre — the prep and the system. Nothing else moves.

Blasting is priced by the surface standard your engineer specified; the coating is priced by the system on the spec. Masking, abrasive, cure time and the film-thickness report are in both. GST included.

    From$28 /m²

    Abrasive blasting

WA garnet in the booth, ISO 8501-1. Sweep blast Sa 1 at $28, commercial Sa 2 at $38, near-white Sa 2½ at $48, white metal Sa 3 at $62 a square metre. Profile checked with tape on every job.

    From$26 /m²

    Two-pack epoxy priming

75 µm of two-pack epoxy primer, sprayed and cured under cover. The right answer for steel that will be topcoated by someone else, or lives indoors.

    From$48 /m²

    Epoxy + polyurethane

75 µm epoxy primer plus a 50 µm polyurethane topcoat — 125 µm total. Colour-stable, workshop-standard, and what most plant and trailer work gets.

    From$78 /m²

    C5-M three-coat

Epoxy primer, epoxy MIO, polyurethane — 250 µm to ISO 12944 C5-M for coastal and marine exposure. Needs Sa 2½ near-white minimum underneath it.

    From$96 /m²

    Inorganic zinc silicate system

Zinc-rich inorganic silicate primer under epoxy and polyurethane, 250 µm. The long-life answer for structural steel going north. Booth only — it needs controlled cure conditions.

    Minimum job$980

    Minimum job charge

Under about 20 m² the booth setup and the cure cycle cost the same whatever the system, so that is what we bill. Handling is added outside it.

    Flat$260

    Metro pick-up & return

One truck movement each way inside the Perth metro. Kwinana, Henderson, Bibra Lake, Welshpool, Canning Vale and Malaga are all inside it.

    Site blasting

For plant that can't be moved. Containment, access and waste capture are site-specific, so we walk it and quote it — we don't guess a rate for a yard we haven't seen.

Rolling stock and plant on a maintenance cycle — quoted per fleet after we walk the yard. Lead-based and asbestos-containing coatings we do not touch; see the FAQ for who does.

What the yards say when the float comes back

    ★★★★★

“Forty-two metres of handrail that had to leave our shop coated to C5-M with a report the client's inspector would accept. Hardstand blasted it Sa 2½, shot the three coats and handed back film readings on every run. No argument at the gate.”

Priya N. · fabrication supervisor, Henderson

    ★★★★★

“The bucket was more rust than steel and I half expected to be told to bin it. They blasted it back, showed me the pitting before they primed, and let me decide. Came back looking better than the day it was hung.”

Wes T. · earthmoving contractor, Bibra Lake

    ★★★★★

“Trailer chassis picked up Monday morning, blasted and two-packed, back on our hardstand Friday afternoon — inside the week they said. The price on the phone was the price on the invoice, which is rarer than it should be.”

Angelo M. · maintenance manager, Welshpool

    Get it on the schedule

Send the spec through and we'll price the steel

The Blast Line's scenario comes across with the form — item, surface standard, coating system, square metres and how it gets here. We ring back, confirm the area against the drawing, and give you a slot on the hardstand schedule.

We'd call you back the same working day with the booth slot and the cure window — or ring (08) 9000 0382 now if the float is already loaded.

Tell us who the coordinator asks for — letters, spaces, apostrophes and hyphens.

A number we can ring back — digits, spaces and + only.

    Where is the steel now?

    A short description — letters, numbers, spaces and , . - / only.

Your best figure — we confirm it on the hardstand.

Optional — tells us which cure window to aim for.

No deposit. Nothing is booked until we have seen the steel or the drawing.

    Asked at the roller door

The six questions we get before every job

Which surface standard do I actually need?
Whatever the drawing or the coating data sheet says — and if it says nothing, the system decides it. Epoxy primer over a sweep blast is fine for shed steel that stays dry. Anything going to the coast, offshore or into a C5-M environment needs Sa 2½ near-white as a minimum, because a three-coat system will not hold on scale. White metal Sa 3 is for immersion, tank linings and the jobs where an inspector will hold a comparator against it. Ring us with the data sheet and we will read it with you rather than guess.
How long before I can load it?
Epoxy primer is hard-dry in about six hours at 25 °C and handleable the next morning. A full polyurethane topcoat wants overnight before it is strapped down, and a C5-M or zinc silicate build wants a clear twenty-four hours between coats, so a three-coat job is a three-day job whatever the square metres. Cold and humid slows all of it. We tell you the cure clock when we book, not when you turn up with the float.
What is in a coating report?
Ambient and steel temperature and dew point at the time of blasting and at each coat; the assessed blast grade against the ISO 8501-1 comparator; the surface profile from replica tape; batch numbers for every product; wet film readings taken as we spray and dry film readings taken after cure, with the spot and area averages against the specified thickness. It is a couple of pages, it comes as a PDF, and it is what an inspector or an insurer will ask for two years from now.
Can you blast on our site?
Yes, for plant that cannot come to us — dozers, crushers, fixed tanks, structural steel already erected. What it costs depends on containment, access and how we capture the spent abrasive, and those are site-specific enough that we will not put a rate on this page. We walk it, we tell you what containment it needs, and we quote it. Note that we shoot epoxy systems on site: zinc silicate needs controlled cure conditions and stays in the booth.
Do you handle lead paint or asbestos-containing coatings?
No — and you should be wary of anyone who says yes casually. Removing lead-based or asbestos-containing coatings is licensed, notifiable work with its own containment, air monitoring and waste tracking. If your steel is old enough to be a question, get it tested first; a WorkSafe WA licensed asbestos removalist or a hazardous-coatings specialist does that work, and we are happy to blast and coat the steel once it comes back clean.
How do you charge for area?
By the square metre of steel surface — every face that gets abrasive on it, not the footprint. A 6 m handrail run is roughly 15 m² once you count both sides of the rails, the posts and the base plates. Give us the drawing or your own figure and the Blast Line will price it; we measure it properly when the steel is on the hardstand, and if our figure and yours disagree we ring you before the nozzle starts. Under about 20 m² the $980 minimum job charge applies whatever the system.
