The drummy answer

Hollow-sounding tiles mean the bed has let go. Retiling over them moves the problem — we'll say no to that job, and tell you what the fix actually is.

The lippage answer

Large format on an unlevel slab reads every millimetre. Sometimes the honest quote includes levelling compound — and we'll show you the straightedge before we ask for it.

Word of mouth

What the southern suburbs say

The shower niche lines up with the grout joints. Nobody notices, which is the point.

Asked every week

The questions every job starts with

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Labour is priced per square metre: walls from $85/m², floors from $62/m², waterproofing $55/m². A typical full bathroom — 22 m² of walls, 5 m² of floor, 9 m² of membrane — lands around $2,675 in labour. Mosaics add $30/m² and 1200×600 large format adds $25/m², because both genuinely take longer to lay well.

Tiles are yours: you choose them, you buy them, and the budget stays in your hands.

Do you supply tiles?

No — we're labour only, and we think that's the honest split. You pick and buy the tiles; we'll tell you plainly if the one you've fallen for will fight the wall. If it helps, we can get trade price at the supplier — you still choose, you still own the receipt.

What's waterproofing, and do I need it?

It's the membrane under the tiles that keeps water inside the wet area — and in WA, wet areas must comply with AS 3740. If your job includes a shower, bath or laundry floor, yes, you need it, and your compliance certificate is part of the invoice, not an extra. The tile hides the most important work we do.

How long does a bathroom take?

Strip Monday, waterproof Tuesday, cure, tile Thursday–Friday, grout the following Monday. Cure time is the schedule, not us — a membrane rushed under tiles is a leak with a start date.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

Sometimes, honestly. If the existing bed is sound and the door and fixture heights still work, tiling over can be real value. But drummy tiles mean the bed has let go, and often the strip-out is cheaper than the compromise. We'll tap the floor and tell you which job you have.

Why did my grout crack?

Almost always movement. Buildings move; grout doesn't. Junctions and internal corners should be siliconed, not grouted, and floors need movement joints roughly every four to five metres. If your last tiler grouted the corners, that's your crack — and it's fixable.
