How it runs
Route first, quote second, car last
We check the route before we price it
Every quote we send says which approval path it is on and why. If it needs a written application, that happens before the car comes in — not after you have paid for a fit we cannot certify.
We work with your OT, not around them
If an occupational therapist has specified the controls, we build to their report and talk to them directly. If you have not seen one yet and the modification needs a driving assessment, we will say so rather than take the booking.
The paperwork is $180 or it is free
We charge a flat $180 to prepare the application and book the inspection. It is optional. Plenty of our customers lodge it themselves and we hand over the measurements they need.
Fitted, tested, then the inspection
Welshpool workshop, one bay per car. We drive it, adjust the reach and the throw with you in the seat, and only then present it for inspection.
When you do not need us for the paperwork
Our $180 covers preparing the application and booking the Authorised Inspection Station. It is our fee for our time. It is not the Department’s permit fee, and on one common set of facts the Department’s fee is nothing at all:
So if you are comfortable filling in a form, do it yourself and keep the $180. We will still give you the fitting measurements and the vehicle details the application asks for, at no charge, whether or not you book the work with us.
While you are on that page, the same concession carries a licence saving worth far more than our fee — “100% exemption from vehicle licence fee and vehicle licence duty” for a vehicle that:
- “Have a GVM not exceeding 4,500 kg.”
- “Be fitted with an approved wheelchair ramp or hoist, or an equivalent modification.”
- “Be primarily used for transporting people with disabilities who must use a wheelchair.”
And the exclusion, in the Department’s words: “Vehicles that are used for commercial purposes (e.g. taxi, small charter vehicles) are not eligible for this concession.” We do not administer the concession and we take no cut of it. Ask us and we will point you at the form.

What people ask before they book
Does my modification need approval?
The Department’s own instruction is blunt: “Before making any modifications, you must check whether DTMI approval is required.” Three modifications do not need a written pre‑approval. Quoted in full, as a list, from the Department’s page:
“The following modifications do not need written pre-approval from the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) and can be assessed by an Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) vehicle examiner at time of the inspection. A Modification Permit will be required to be issued by the AIS approving your particular modification.”

An AIS is a workshop authorised to examine vehicles on the Department’s behalf. For the three modifications above, the examiner assesses the work at the time of the inspection rather than the Department assessing a drawing beforehand, and “A Modification Permit will be required to be issued by the AIS approving your particular modification.”
One practical consequence catches people out: “You must pre-pay for the modification permit before you present the vehicle for inspection.” Turning up without having paid means turning around.
What does the permit cost?
We do not publish that figure, because it is not ours and it sits behind a DoTDirect form rather than on a public price list. What we can tell you is the rule that decides whether you pay it at all: “Where an ACROD number can be supplied on behalf of the person with disability to be transported in the vehicle, the vehicle modification permit is issued free of charge.”
Our $180 is a separate thing entirely — our time preparing the application and booking the inspection. Decline it and you pay us nothing for paperwork.
What is an SSM compliance plate?
It means a second stage manufacturer built the modification into the vehicle before it was first licensed, and certified it. The Department’s wording: “If the vehicle has a hoist or ramp in-built by a second stage manufacturer and is fitted with a Second Stage Manufacturer (SSM) compliance plate, modification approval is not required for these vehicles as they comply with vehicle standards.”
If that plate is in your car, there is nothing for us to lodge and nothing for you to pay us for approval work. Send us a photo of it and we will tell you what it covers. Anything added on top of it afterwards is a new modification and gets checked on its own.
Will this affect my insurance?
The risk the Department names is specific and we will not dress it up beyond their sentence: “If you modify your vehicle without the necessary approval, you may be issued with a defect notice (yellow sticker) and may void your vehicle insurance.”
Whether your particular policy cares about an approved modification is between you and your insurer. Tell them, in writing, and keep the permit with the logbook.
Do you work with my occupational therapist?
Yes, and we prefer it. Send us the report or the OT’s contact and we quote to the specification rather than to a guess. If the controls the OT has specified would push the job onto the written‑application route, we tell both of you before anything is ordered.
Can the modification be taken out again later?
Hand controls, spinner knobs and pedal modifications come out and the car goes back to standard — we do this regularly at the end of a lease or before a sale. Tell us at the quote if that is likely, because removal is itself a change to an approved vehicle and we will check with the Department what it needs before we book it, rather than guess in a FAQ.
