Flue replacement & re-flue
The heater is fine, the flue has rusted through at the flashing or the cowl has blown off. New twin-wall casing, new flashing, old flue to the tip — the heater and the hearth stay where they are.

Roof flashing
A flashing cut and dressed to the roof you actually have. Tile takes a lead-dressed tray, Colorbond takes a boot to the rib profile — a steeper pitch is a bigger, slower flashing.

Hearths
A hearth pad where there is timber floor under the heater, or stone cut to the heater’s own footprint where the room deserves it. Both sized off the manufacturer’s plate, not off a rule of thumb.

Flue sweep & service
Casing swept, cowl and flashing checked, door rope and glass gasket replaced if they are gone. Book it in March and April — by May we are installing, not sweeping.

Permits. Some local governments want a building permit for a solid-fuel heater. We’ll tell you whether yours does — it’s your permit, and it isn’t ours to charge you for.

Where we work
The hills are most of our winter
Out of Maida Vale, at the foot of the scarp. The hills aren’t a travel zone for us — Kalamunda, Mundaring and Roleystone cost exactly what Bayswater costs.
Everything inside the metro and everything up the scarp is a normal day for us. Once a year, through autumn, we run a week down south — that’s the only travel we ever quote.

Six questions we get before every winter
Why does my flue have to be that long?
Because AS/NZS 2918 says so, and the number falls out of your roof, not out of our quote. The cowl has to finish at least 600 mm above the point where the flue comes through, and at least 600 mm above any part of the roof within 3 m horizontally. On a normal gable that second rule is the one that bites.
Here is the part people find surprising: if the flue comes through inside 3 m of the ridge, the ridge itself is the highest roof in the span — so the cowl has to clear the ridge by 600, and the flue length stops depending on the pitch altogether. Move the flue further down the roof than 3 m and the flue gets shorter, because the highest thing it has to clear is no longer the ridge. The section at the top of this page draws both cases.
Do I need a council permit?
Sometimes. Some local governments treat a solid-fuel heater as building work and want a permit; others don’t. We’ll tell you which one yours is when we quote, and we’ll give you what you need to lodge it — but it’s your permit in your name, and it isn’t ours to charge you for.
How often should the flue be swept?
Once a year for a heater that runs all winter, and we’d rather do it in March or April than in June. If you burn wet wood, or you damp it right down overnight, make it twice — creosote is what turns a flue fire from a story into an insurance claim. Sweep and service is $220 and it is booked separately from an install.
Freestanding or inbuilt?
Freestanding radiates from five sides and heats a big open room better; inbuilt gives you the floor back and looks calmer in a smaller room. Freestanding is cheaper to install because the flue run is simple and everything is reachable. Inbuilt costs more because the enclosure, the chase and the making-good are part of the job.
There’s an existing masonry chimney — can we use it?
Often yes, with a stainless liner run the full height and the top made good. But that is a job we price on the roof, not on this form — we need to see the flue’s condition, the throat, and whether the chimney is even plumb. Same goes for an asbestos ceiling or a second-storey penetration.
When should I book for winter?
February and March. By the first cold week in May we are three weeks out, and by June we are only doing breakdowns and re-flues. A heater booked in autumn gets installed on a dry roof by two people who aren’t rushing.
